π¦Έβ‘GGTM Turns 90 β and Unleashes Its Superpower
π Wednesday, April 15, 2026 | β±οΈ ~4 min read | π€ Theme: Superpower

"As GGTM turns 90, resilience proves to be our greatest superpower β carried through stories of life's toughest moments and a simple question that sparks real connection." πͺ
π 90 Years and Counting: The Superpower Within

Club President Shubham Saloni welcomes the room to a night worth celebrating β ninety years of GGTM and counting
Club President Shubham Saloni opened the evening with a warm welcome and set the tone for a milestone evening β tonight marked part of GGTM's month-long 90th anniversary celebration, with a shortened meeting followed by a members-only social hour to toast nine decades of voices, growth, and community.
To kick things off, Shubham posed a fitting question to the room: βWhat small habit is your superpower?β From patience (Dennis) to quick thinking (Marta) and resilience (Sarah), the answers revealed something deeper β our superpower aren't flashy. They're built in the small moments we show up.
And who better to carry that torch into the evening than a Toastmaster stepping into the role for the very first time? Please welcome Ryan Davis β first time in the chair, and he didn't come to play it safe.
π€ Toastmaster of the Evening: Ryan Davis

Toastmaster of the Evening Ryan Davis β first time in the role, and he nailed it
Ryan brought us back to being seven years old β capes on, jumping off the couch, certain we could be anything. As we grow older, the definition of superpower shifts. Less about flight, more about the ability to build. Resilience β getting up when the world has beaten us down. Empathy β truly seeing other people. Curiosity β staying genuinely interested. The real question isn't what superpower you want. It's which ones you already have. When we stop trying to fly like someone else and start living in our own skin β that's when we become formidable.
ποΈ Prepared Speeches
π₯° "How Are You" β Sheila Vida (Division C International Speech Contest Prep)

Sheila delivering "How Are You" β giving GGTM a preview of what was headed to Division C
A question most people overlook became a doorway to something deeper. Sheilaβs speech explored how βHow are you?β can transform from a routine greeting into a genuine connection.
With emotional shifts, vivid storytelling, and growing confidence, she showed us:
π¬ Itβs not about the wordsβitβs about the connection.
π¨π·π "Life and Death" β Jay Yamamoto

Jay's winning speech said it best: resilience isn't just surviving life's toughest moments β it's the strangers with a machete who help you back on your feet
In June 2016, Jay took a two-month sabbatical to Costa Rica β over his father's protests. What started as a serene ATV ride along the coast turned harrowing: a narrowing road, a fallen tree, a tipped ATV, and Jay walking through mud, injured and alone. Then a hut appeared on the horizon. The strangers inside β one of them carrying a machete β didn't hesitate to help him right the ATV and send him on his way, refusing to accept a single dollar. Jay closed by reading an email he sent his father shortly after: a thank-you for the man he raised him to be. The message he left us with: don't wait. Say something to the people who matter to you, while you can.
π¬ If you were half the man I am, you'd be very short!
π― Table Topics: Improv Edition
Table Topics Master Shubham Saloni brought a fresh twist to the segmentβthis wasnβt your usual Table Topics, it was teamwork in action. One-word-at-a-time storytelling pushed creativity, adaptability, and collaboration to the limit.
π§ ποΈ Valeriy & Alex
A complaint email β it's too cold in the office
A masterpiece of collaborative passive aggression. "Dear John, the freaking air is freezing in my office." The kicker: a threat to send Mom β someone who abhors freezing temperatures β to reprimand management directly if the situation isn't resolved. Regards, Val & Alex.
πΈ Chris (guest) & Grace
A motivational speech about patience
Starting with the unexpected lesson of eating slowly, our guest duo delivered a quietly philosophical meditation on patience β and a promise to practice badminton tomorrow. Sometimes the best motivation is showing up and letting things unfold.
π Vedant & Gautam
Pitch a teleportation startup
The pitch: instant teleportation. The surprise feature: instant food delivery with zero delay. The energy: pure startup optimism. We're in.
π©οΈ Derick & Mike
Survive a plane crash
In an uncontrolled F-15, two buttons stand between you and disaster. Derick and Mike walked us through the ropes with remarkable calm β and honestly, we feel slightly more prepared for our next flight

Table Topics Master Shubham kicks off the improv games β and Valeriy & Alex steal the show one word at a time
π― Evaluations
π§ General Evaluator β Tavisan Ramesh
Full agenda, started on time (ran slightly over β the price of a packed meeting).
Tavisan noted the festive atmosphere and decorations befitting the 90th anniversary celebration. A special congratulations to Ryan Davis on his first outing as Toastmaster of the Evening β he wore it well.
π«Ά "How Are You" β Vedant Bothikar evaluates Sheila
Vedant came in as an ordinary listener β despite having heard the speech three times β and still felt the goosebumps. Eyes across the room were glued to the stage, a powerful sign. He praised Sheila's expressive storytelling and dynamic vocal shifts from somber to elated. Suggestions: a slight volume bump, sharper transitions, and a beat of silence after the "3, 2, 1" countdown for maximum impact.
πποΈ "Life and Death" β Alex Wu evaluates Jay
Alex praised the title "Life and Death" for doing the heavy lifting before Jay even opened his mouth. The Costa Rica story was vivid and funny β a rare combination.
Suggestions: trim the mechanical details of the accident to keep the emotional core tight, vary vocal pace and pitch more with the gravity of the subject, and consider a surprise reveal to land the ending with even more punch.

β±οΈ Functionary Reports
β± Timer (Luzee): Vedant & Jay both ran over
π€ Ah-Counter (Omar): 15 filler words β or so Omar says...
π Grammarian (Ryan): βResilienceβ spotted β Sheila & Ryan
π³οΈ Ballot Counter (Albert)
πΈ Photographer (Mike): Capturing GGTM history in real time

π Sheila Places 2nd at Division C

Sheila takes 2nd place at Division C β with Tavisan and Area Director Alex there to cheer her on
Sheila gave GGTM a preview of her Division C International Speech Contest entry at Wednesday's meeting β one last round of feedback before the big day. The room was locked in from start to finish, and evaluator Vedant, hearing it for the third time, still felt the goosebumps. The audience's eyes never left her. That's when you know a speech is ready.
On Sunday, she took that same speech to the Division C stage β and came home with 2nd place.
For a club celebrating 90 years of voices that dared to speak up, Sheila's achievement is a reminder of what GGTM has always been about β showing up, putting in the work, and leaving everything on the stage.
Congratulations, Sheila! GGTM couldn't be prouder. π
π Thank You
