From heartfelt storytelling to wildly imaginative Tall Tales, GGTM was proudly represented on the contest stage.

๐Ÿ‘ Congratulations to both โ€” we are incredibly proud of you!

๐Ÿ† The wins donโ€™t stop there โ€” back at the club, we were creating our own moments of luck, courage, and connection.๐Ÿ€

๐Ÿ€ Get Lucky: Finding Opportunity in Every Moment

Interim President Albert Yan set a warm, intimate tone for the evening with an icebreaker question โ€œWhatโ€™s the most fortunate thing that has happened to you lately?โ€ With a smaller group, everyone had the chance to reflect on recent moments of fortune (or misfortune).

Guest Sarah shared an exciting win โ€” the opportunity to start her own podcast, turning possibility into action.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Moments of luck from members:

  • Derick ran a mile ๐Ÿƒ

  • Caitlin welcomed a new niece ๐Ÿ‘ถ

  • Sheila gained unexpected prep time for Table Topics thanks to a canceled meeting

Albert also reminded us of the small but powerful details that shape our meetings โ€” a firm handshake ๐Ÿค and enthusiastic applause ๐Ÿ‘.

๐ŸŽค Toastmaster for the Evening: Valeriy Vislobokov

Valeriy sets the tone for a night of luck, laughter, and self-created opportunity ๐Ÿ€

Valeriy opened the meeting with a light joke, suggesting the smaller crowd might be due to recovering from St. Patrickโ€™s Day festivities ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿป and a personal story about his ear infection โ€” reflecting on how luck sometimes depends on the choices we make.

Luck isnโ€™t found โ€” itโ€™s created.

๐ŸŽค Prepared Speeches

๐ŸŒฑ Helen Fream โ€” "Lucky" (2-Minute Special)

What does โ€œget luckyโ€ mean to you?
Winning the lottery? Finding $20 on the street?
Helen challenged these ideas, reframing luck as something far more intentional. For her, luck is built through showing up, staying open, and taking small steps โ€” even when nothing is guaranteed.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThe luckiest people arenโ€™t the ones who wait. Theyโ€™re the ones who act.โ€

๐ŸŽ Michelle Wen โ€” "The Teacher I Wanted to Be"

What keeps someone coming back โ€” even when the work is tough?

Michelle shared her experience teaching in high-needs classrooms, where challenges were constant and progress wasnโ€™t always visible. Yet she kept returning โ€” not because it was easy, but because it mattered.

Through those moments, she discovered the kind of teacher she wanted to be: someone who connects, adapts, and shows up for students in whatever way they need.

โœจ Those lessons didnโ€™t stay in the classroom โ€” they continue to shape her leadership style today, both in Toastmasters and beyond.

๐Ÿ† Albert Yan โ€” "Speeches Worth Giving"

What makes a speech worth giving?

Albert reflected on his Toastmasters journey โ€” nearly eight years, yet only a handful of speeches delivered. What held him back wasnโ€™t ability, but a familiar question: Do I have anything worth saying?

That question followed him all the way to a recent visit to Taiwan, where he was invited to speak at his former high school. Faced with the same doubt, he returned to a simple truth โ€” every meaningful speech begins with a story.

By reconnecting with his own journey, Albert reminded us that impact doesnโ€™t come from having the โ€œperfectโ€ message, but from having the courage to share something real.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œWhat is your story?โ€

From showing up, to leading with purpose, to sharing stories that matter โ€” Helen, Michelle, and Albert brought luck, leadership, and meaning to the stage ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿšช Sheila Vida โ€” โ€œHow Are You ?โ€

In her contest speech, Sheila shared her journey of finding her voice and stepping into authentic connection.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œAnswer the question. Step through the door. Hold it open for someone else.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ Table Topics: โ€œLuck!โ€

Table Topics Master Sheila Vida brought a fun twist by using a random number generator ๐ŸŽฒ, keeping speakers on their toes and answers spontaneous.

Hereโ€™s how our speakers explored luck from every angle:

๐Ÿ†๏ธ Agasthian
โ€œWhat is your favorite quote about luck?โ€
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThe universe is conspiring for you.โ€
He reflected on trusting the process โ€” even when it doesnโ€™t feel like it in the moment โ™Ÿ๏ธ

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Sarah (Guest)
โ€œHas luck played a vital role in your success?โ€
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œGet clarity on what you want โ€” and opportunities will follow.โ€
Her podcast opportunity started with clarity and intention ๐ŸŽง

๐Ÿบ Moaad (Guest)
โ€œIf you could put luck into a jar, what would it look like?โ€
๐Ÿ’ก Health โ€” the foundation that makes everything else possible ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒฑ Sophie
โ€œDo you have a luck ritual or charm?โ€
She doesnโ€™t rely on luck โ€” she creates the conditions for it to happen

๐Ÿ“ˆ Prateek
โ€œCan too much luck be a bad thing?โ€
Luck without struggle can shape the wrong mindset โ€” growth comes from embracing challenges

๐Ÿ’ซ Caitlin
โ€œRight place, right time โ€” coincidence or luck?โ€
Maybe not luck โ€” just timing in a random, unpredictable world of dating!

๐ŸŒˆ Kat
โ€œWhatโ€™s at the end of a rainbow?โ€
From Hawaii, she painted a vivid picture: waterfalls, oceans, and the spirit of Aloha ๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸŽจ Ella
โ€œWhatโ€™s an opportunity you didnโ€™t leave to chance?โ€
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œGoing the extra mile is what makes the difference.โ€
Her proactive approach led to her artwork being featured on a billboard in Oakland

From fate to hard work โ€” Table Topics explored every side of luck ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ€

๐ŸŽฏ Evaluations

๐Ÿงญ General Evaluator โ€” Albert Yan

Albertโ€™s evaluation focused on how to make meetings more impactful โ€” especially in smaller settings.
๐Ÿ’ก Key insight:
Keeping opening remarks concise frees up valuable time for Table Topics, giving both members and guests more opportunities to take the floor and shine.

๐ŸŽฏ On evaluations:
Albert offered a useful reminder for newer evaluators: resist the urge to retell the speech. Instead, aim to briefly acknowledge the highlights, then spend the bulk of your time on specific observations and actionable suggestions.

๐Ÿ“Œ Additional observations:

  • Taking multiple roles shows dedication โ€” but balance matters

  • Signing up early strengthens the meeting

  • New members are always supported โ€” just step in

Caitlin Brown โ€” Michelle

Caitlin praised Michelleโ€™s engaging opening and authentic storytelling, noting how her message drew the audience in from the start.
She also highlighted Michelleโ€™s strong eye contact and body language, which added confidence and connection to the delivery.

๐Ÿ’ก To elevate further:
Slowing the pace in key moments would add clarity, and practicing enunciation on more challenging words would smooth out the delivery even more.

๐Ÿ† Derick Le โ€” Albert

Derick set an enthusiastic tone from the start, declaring it his "lucky day" to evaluate a speaker of Albert's caliber. And the praise was well-earned.

What stood out most was Albertโ€™s strong presence, noting how his pacing, storytelling, and body language worked in harmony, with purposeful hand gestures and a vocal delivery that made every word feel intentional.

๐Ÿ’กTo elevate even further, Derick suggested leaning into intentional pauses to let key messages breathe, and experimenting with more vocal variety to bring important moments into sharper relief.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œAlbert defines what it means to be a great speaker.โ€

Ryan Davis โ€” Sheila

Ryan commended Sheila for delivering a great speech and an inspiring story.

Albert, Derick, and Ryan โ€” guiding the room with thoughtful insights, sharp feedback, and meaningful takeaways ๐Ÿงญ
