Embracing Life's Challenges with Heart, Strength and Joy

Dear Fellow Toastmaster!

Last week, we hosted the International and Humorous Speech Contest, and the boardroom was filled with a mix of emotions. Contestants inspired us by addressing feelings of demotivation, disappointment, and despair, while highlighting the importance of finding positivity and humor in every situation.

Last Wednesday, we hosted the International and Humorous Speech Contest. Thank you to all the members who helped run the event, and a special shout-out to Gene for taking on the role of Contest Chair.

Winners of the International Speech Contest

During our meeting we:

  • 🌊 Learned from Helen how the tiny disappointments we face navigating through life may actually be life protecting us from a big wave. (πŸ† First Place-International Speech ContestπŸ†)

  • πŸ™‚ Learned from Sheila on three steps to navigate demotivation: 1) Acknowledge the emotion by stepping into the darkness, 2) Search for that tiny speck of light by doing something you love and find easy, and 3) Ask for help by sharing how you feel with someone. (πŸ† Second Place-International Speech ContestπŸ†)

  • 🧹 Alex speculated about how wizards and witches in Hogwarts would have relieved themselves while standing, as J.K. Rowling claims they did before adopting muggle plumbing methods. (πŸ† Second Place-Humorous Speech ContestπŸ†)

  • πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ πŸ· Helen mentioned that it only takes a crush on a cute French guy, some rosΓ©, and a splash of perseverance to complete a triathlon and be a poster child for Winston Churchill’s quote on courage. (πŸ† First Place-Humorous Speech ContestπŸ†)
